About the Directory

The purpose of the African Agribusiness Directory is to drive investment and open-up partnership opportunities for small and medium scale agriculture businesses across the African continent. The directory will increase the visibility of these agriculture businesses to the national and global community, opening new opportunities for them to achieve their goals. SME agribusinesses provide inputs, services and access to markets critical for small and medium-scale commercial producers to thrive. This contributes to strong and growing agriculture sectors that support positive nutritional outcomes and increased income in rural and urban communities.

The African Agribusiness Directory is managed by AgThrive and Agri Reseux International.

How the companies were selected

The directory is not yet exhaustive or comprehensive. For the initial launch, 9 countries were covered and 50 companies profiled per country (70 in Nigeria) across 14 business types. The focus was on small and medium scale companies that need external investment and technical support. In most cases the largest companies were not profiled. In a few cases companies chose not to be part of the directory. Currently companies do not pay to be part of the directory. Inclusion in the directory is free advertising for businesses that often don’t have a website and/or have very limited communication and advertising budgets.

How the data was collected

The data was collected by in-country consultants using an Android based application, the Agribusiness Profiling Tool, owned by AgThrive and Agri Reseux International. Once collected the data is sent directly to the Agribusiness Database where it is checked and cleaned. A portion of the data is then uploaded to the online African Agribusiness Directory.

Utilizing the Agribusiness Profiling Tool for collection of data allows for comprehensive and consistent data collection that can be compared across businesses. In the future, the tool will be expanded to include all types of agribusinesses.

Data use and permissions

Companies in the directory provided their consent for use of the data by AgThrive and Agri Reseux International. Subscribers to the directory can use the data for their own use but cannot sell it. Please see the Terms and Conditions for details.
